Walmart using LED Lights Throughout New Facility in Canada

Walmart Canada announced that it will open its first sustainable refrigerated distribution center in 2010. They expect this distribution facility to be one of the most energy-efficient of its kind in North America. Energy savings are estimated to be 60% more energy-efficient than Walmart's traditional refrigerated distribution centers. In a first for a facility of its type, the entire building will be lit exclusively by low-energy solid-state (LED) lighting.

"We've set the ambitious goal of building the most sustainable distribution centre possible, while at the same time delivering a compelling return on investment," said Andy Ellis, senior VP supply chain for Walmart Canada. Ellis said the facility will be a “living lab” that demonstrates sustainable operations, products and technologies, while showing that environmental sustainability can go hand-in-hand with business sustainability." In addition, the entire facility will be lit by LED lighting. LED lights operate at low temperatures, have long life spans andstrike instantly, according to the retailer.

Grocery Store Expansion Will Use Energy Efficient LED Lighting

The Troy New York Planning Board voted to approve a grocery store expansion for Golub Company Grocery Store Price Chopper. Representatives for the Schenectady-based Golub Corporation, Price Chopper, spoke to the board about their plans to expand their current Price Chopper on Second Avenue into the former Rite Aid next door. Trieste Savona, a Golub design representative, said the store will be modeled slightly after the company’s Malta location with a single entrance, but will also be unique, in that its design did not fit any of the Price Chopper models developed over the last few years.

The store’s entrance has also been redesigned with smoke-glazed windows and a main sign lit by LED lights, which, according to Savona, will help eliminate the glow usually associated with box-letter signs. The store’s colors will also be changed from the company’s traditional red, white, and blue.

The store will also be expanded in line with the company’s recent goals of becoming more energy efficient through the use of the latest technologies available for lighting, refrigeration, plumbing, and more.

Energy Savings Important For Manufacturing Companies

By George Plattenburg
Senior VP Sales and Marketing Servidyne

Going green is more than just a catchphrase, but it can seem like one to most manufacturers because their primary focus is maintaining operations and production levels. However, if done correctly and with forethought, many manufacturing plants can go green by dramatically reducing their energy consumption and expenditures.

In addition to the “green” benefits of reducing energy consumption, e.g., reducing the site’s carbon footprint, the savings that result make this a good business decision. Many energy-reducing retrofits to existing equipment and systems pay for themselves inside of four years, and they provide ongoing cost savings over their useful lives. With an increased emphasis on the environment, the focus on green technology has made it easier than ever to identify and implement efficiency upgrades, beginning with no-cost improvement measures your maintenance staff can implement quickly to those requiring a long-term investment. Here are some key steps to follow:

Read rest opf the article at http://www.areadevelopment.com/siteSelection/dec09/energy-efficient-facilities-business-benefits0110.shtml

The author comments on the importance of looking at lighting as a source of energy savings.
Although every case will be different, there are a few common areas where facilities find cost savings and consumption efficiencies.

" In many manufacturing plants, lighting has been long since forgotten. It’s overhead and out of the way, and no one pays any attention to it unless bulbs fail and need to be replaced. Well, that old lighting system may be a gold mine for you in your efforts to improve energy efficiency and “go green.” New lighting technologies developed over the past decade can dramatically reduce your costs while simultaneously improving lighting levels and improving burn-hours. And think about lighting controls, too — these can typically reduce lighting usage by 30 to 60 percent based on occupancy. In other cases, antiquated lighting systems can and should be replaced. In addition to cost savings, lighting-efficiency improvements can qualify your company for government tax deductions or utility rebates.

Case in point: One of the world’s largest producers and recyclers of lead-acid batteries recently retrofitted the lighting system in its transportation distribution center located in California. The lighting system in this 28,000-square-foot facility had not been significantly improved since construction of the building in 1971. Lights in the office areas were inefficient fixtures containing T12 lamps and magnetic ballasts. The age of these fixtures meant light levels were severely diminished. Additionally, metal halide high-bay fixtures in high-ceiling industrial areas produced inadequate light levels, while consuming large amounts of power. Lighting experts engineered a lighting system for this facility with three goals in mind: to increase light levels throughout the building, to save energy by reducing wattage and operating hours, and to remove toxic PCB ballasts in old fixtures.

"Change does not have to be intimidating. As stated, something as simple as a two-week lighting retrofit can add up to big savings — all without having to worry about downtime. "

New Green Building Standards For California Buildings

The California Building Standards Commission has adopted the first-in-the-nation Green Building Standards Code, called CALGreen. The code, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2011, will require all new buildings in the state to meet more stringent energy efficiency and environmental standards. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the action lays the foundation for the move to greener buildings constructed with environmentally advanced building practices that reduce energy use, decrease waste, and conserve resources.

CALGreen will require mandatory inspections of energy systems (such as furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, and other mechanical equipment) for nonresidential buildings with more than 10,000 square feet of floor space, to ensure that the energy systems are working at their maximum capacity and according to their design efficiencies. It also requires that every new building constructed in California reduce water consumption by 20 percent, divert 50 percent of construction waste from landfills, and install materials that emit low amounts of indoor pollutants.

In addition, separate water meters are required for nonresidential buildings’ indoor and outdoor water use, with a requirement for moisture-sensing irrigation systems for larger landscape projects. While water conservation is itself a priority in the state, water consumption is directly tied to energy consumption. A 2005 report from the California Energy Commission (CEC) found that water use consumes 19 percent of the state’s electricity, 30 percent of its natural gas, and at least 88 billion gallons of diesel fuel per year, although those figures included water heating.

Upon passing state building inspection, California’s property owners will be able to label their facilities as CALGreen compliant without using additional third-party certification.
