Department of Energy Supports LED Parking Lot Lighting

The US Department of Energy and its partner Commercial Building Energy Alliance is supporting the LED Parking Garage Market. They are doing this because high efficiency lighting systems like LED Lighting cuts energy costs and offers immediate financial returns. In 2008 a working group was formed to investigate the use of LED Parking garage and deck lighting for retail buildings. Because LED lighting has such great potential for significant energy savings the DOE has been actively supporting the launch of new products.

These retailers include Best Buy, Food Lion, The Home Depot, JC Penney, Kohl's, McDonalds, Target, Walmart and Whole Foods Market. The CBEA published the Advantages of LED Parking Garage Lighting on their website:

Overall Lighting System Efficiency- LEDs very efficient because of LED directionality meaning nearly100% of light leaves luminaire

Life- Expected Long Life

Maintenance- Very low maintenance expected due to long life and durability

Environmental- Contains no mercury

Light Output Depreciation- Low lumen depreciation rate

Lighting Uniformity- Directionality and flexibility make uniformity ratios below 10:1 easily obtainable

Dimmable- Fully dimmable

Durability- Soldi State technology much less fragile and susceptible to vandalism, breakage, or damage from high winds and vibration

  1. LED fixtures are efficient and presently the optics provide less output than Metal Halide. Surely this technology will change in the new future! Remember the first "Flat Screens" TV's sold at SHARPER IMAGE,, $30,000.00 for a 30" TV. Sounds like today's L.E.D. fixtures! Yes the prices will eventually come down to earth, but you do not have to wait to realize 25%-30% savings today with multi-headed parking lot poles. Check out the GreenSpiderEnergy.com web site. Their product has less than a 4 month R.O.I. can be used with your present management system, photo-cell or time clock. Install-Save-and Forget! And yes, you can use it with the LED fixtures when their prices return to earth
